Besides the inconsistent and often seemingly arbitrary officiating, the unbelievable amount of commercials is why I am starting to enjoy football less. The Wall Street Journal study shows why: 63 minutes of commercials vs. 11 minutes of actual athletics.

Feeling the dissolution of my regular playtest group pretty hard today. Not being able to regularly test out game ideas has now led to not regularly having game ideas. It strikes me how difficult it is to assemble a supportive group that can meet regularly to play your game that quite likely may be crap. If you’re lucky enough to have that, recognize your privilege.

Really interesting concepts in this book. As Ray Otus says, more of a thinker than a fun romp, but well worth the read. The STALKER games are based on this.

I echo Mo Jave’s thoughts here. Even if I never do get to play this game, I am excited to back it because I think it’s bringing some new thinking about RPG design.

I haven’t actually played Prism yet, but everyone I’ve talked to that has had great things to say about it. I know that it brings a refreshing approach to sex & sexuality and a different kind of story to games, and on that rationale alone, I was eager to back it this morning as soon as it launched.

Please consider backing, and please help signal boost!

Whitney Delaglio good luck on the campaign!

I bought an Alligator this week.

I bought an Alligator this week.

After something like 25 years of playing guitar on and off, I bought my first new guitar this week. I have some seriously complex emotions about this. When I first started playing music, my family was not well off. We were never “worried about the next meal” level impoverished, but every purchase had to be considered before being made. So my first guitar was used. And then when I’d saved up for a second, also used. In fact, every guitar I’ve bought since then (sixish, I’d say, ranging from $20 to $200-ish) has been used. Until this week.

This week I spent $400 on a new guitar. If you know guitar prices, you know this is the low end for a good guitar (and, in fact, it was the cheapest resonator in stock), but because I’ve never really gotten out of the penny counting mode, I feel guilty for splurging. To be clear, even though teachers are famously paid poorly, I make enough that an occasional expenditure like this isn’t at all a hardship. Financially, anyway. Mentally, it’s a harder barrier to get over. How can I spend that much money on myself when we need it for… well… we have the money for the other things we’d need it for. And I have been just loving this guitar. I started taking blues slide lessons again, and this beauty is perfect for that. It’s a hobby I’ve been enjoying while rock climbing has been problematic (new shoulder issues and I somehow aggravated my wrist by sleeping on it wrong. Don’t get me started) and isn’t at all a spur-of-the-moment decision. But still, old guilt fighting with, or perhaps intensified by, new joy. Brains are fucking stupid, is I guess my point. Shut up, up there, and let me enjoy this!

(P.S. If you’re not sure why I said I bought an alligator, zoom in on the headstock.)
